Durante décadas, Estados Unidos ha vendido al mundo la imagen de ser el gran paladín de la democracia moderna. Sin embargo, su podrido sistema electoral ha demostrado todo lo contrario. El Colegio Electoral y el predominio absoluto del bipartidismo son dos de los pilares sobre los que descansa ese modelo obsoleto. Ambos mecanismos distinguen al imperio yanqui de la mayoría de las democracias actuales y han generado desconfianza sobre el grado en que la voluntad popular se refleja realmente en la elección del presidente. Mientras en la mayoría de los países democráticos el candidato con más votos obtiene la victoria, el modelo estadounidense funciona bajo reglas distintas que, en determinadas circunstancias, permiten resultados diferentes a los expresados por el voto popular.

This week, on July 24, the 125 member states of the International Criminal Court will vote on whether to fire Chief Prosecutor Karim Khan. This is far more than a vote about the alleged serious misconduct of one powerful man. It represents an unprecedented institutional crisis for both the ICC and the entire system of international justice on which the Palestinian and other suffering people of the Global South still place hope.
