Manifeste
A more transparent example of
persistent deceit and falsehood would be hard to find than the current
campaign attempting to discredit Nicaragua's municipal elections of
November 9th. The controversy makes little sense in isolation. It is
the latest phase of a long disinformation campaign, begun even before
Nicaragua's presidential elections of 2006. It is also part of the
wider campaign by the United States and its European accomplices to
undermine Latin American regional integration processes threatening
their power and influence and that of their allies among the local
regional elites. toni solo looks at how that campaign works in Nicaragua.
contexto regional.

context, Manifesto in Defence of Nicaragua and the progressive media
There
are many factors that lead one to wonder what would have become of
Nicaragua if one of the right wing candidates had won the presidential
elections in 2006. Surely one of the most critical issues that the
national right wing, in its various party political manifestions,
failed
to address while in government was the virtual collapse of the
country's electrical energy
sector. Karla Jacobs examines policy options followed by the
FSLN government since January 2007

The international coverage of the
municipal elections in Nicaragua demonstrates that progressive media of
opinion and analysis can be just as resistant to reality as their
corporate counterparts, living in a virtual world according to personal
taste. Why read false, hypocritical attacks on the FSLN in "Le Monde
Diplomatique" when one can read the same kind of poison in "the
Economist"?... toni solo looks at issues raised by coverage, or the
lack of it, of the Nicaraguan municipal elections

: impasse, opposition ructions,
external aid blackmail
On December 5th the XXXIII Presidential Summit of the Central American
Integration System (SICA) took place in San Pedro Sula, northern
Honduras. The main purpose of the summit was to discuss the impact of
the international financial crisis on the region and approve a plan of
urgent measures aiming to reduce the damage caused by that crisis.
Current SICA President Mel Zelaya of Honduras handed over SICA's
rotating six months presidency to Nicaragua's President Daniel Ortega.
Karla Jacobs reports the details of the summit.

Miguel

For
years it has been more than clear the course US and European Union
policy would take towards the progressive governments of Latin America.
Even in December 2006 it was possible to write "One can only hope Latin
America's Spring endures longer than the one in then Czechoslovakia and
is not frozen stiff by the United States and its European and Pacific
allies manipulating global "free markets" so as to manage economic
downturn as a variation on Clausewitz's "politics by other means"." A
vain hope, it turns out, as recent events in Nicaragua and other
Latin American countries have demonstrated. toni solo takes a closer
