Allow me to extend the Warm and Fraternal Greetings of our Co-Presidents of the Republic, Comandante Daniel Ortega Saavedra and Compañera Rosario Murillo Zambrana, to all the participants of this Opening Ceremony of the National Plan for the Protection and Security of the Coffee Harvest for the 2025-2026 Production Cycle.
We participate in this important act of beginning of harvest, in this emblematic place, excellently organized by our Army, confident in our strengths and in the determined participation of coffee producing families and businesses.
The relationship of mutual trust between producing families, peasant families and the State institutions, including our Army, is a sign of the enormous cohesion that our society has achieved.
We start this harvest of the 2025-2026 cycle aware of the broad impact that coffee production has on society as a whole. It is an inter-relationship articulating trade, transport, services as well as other parts of the economy.
In other words, coffee production is a determining factor for the results of our economic model, generating stability and income for Nicaragua’s families.
Our country continues to make great achievements in the field of economy and production, which together with the enormous social and political advances of our Model of Good Government, allows us to have a stable, cohesive and secure country.
The international prices of the main export products that Nicaragua produces have been favorable for most of the products. In particular, coffee, which in 2025 hovers an average above US$350 dollars a hundredweight. Only yesterday the price of coffee closed at US$400.50 dollars. This reflects an excellent opportunity for our coffee producers in particular and agricultural production in general.
Coffee is the main export product of Nicaragua, being grown in more than 234,000 Mz, being 98% arabica coffee and 2% robusta coffee, located mainly in the Caribbean of the country. 42.3% of the areas are registered in the department of Jinotega, 20.3% in Matagalpa, 16.9% in Nueva Segovia, 13.7% in Madriz and Esteli, and 6.8% in other sectors such as Boaco, Carazo and El Crucero in the rest of the country.
Its social and economic importance is expressed in the fact that more than 52,000 families produce coffee, in 60 municipalities of the country, generating more than 500,000 direct and indirect jobs. The country has 62 drying centers and 110 companies and other organizations exporting to 55 countries around the world.
According to the National Production, Consumption and Trade Plan for this coffee growing cycle 2025-2026, production is expected to reach 3.3 million hundredweight of high quality coffee, mostly destined for export. At today's price it would be about US$1,320 million dollars in exports.
Our model of Sandinista Good Government has generated well-being and security for Nicaragua’s families. We cannot talk about production in such an important area as coffee without mentioning the impressive investments that the Government of Reconciliation and National Unity has made in Health, Education, Roads, Highways and Bridges, as well as the actions to guarantee the active participation and the restitution of the rights of all Nicaraguans.
These social conditions, investment in infrastructure and guaranteeing citizen security, freedom and rights which are fundamental conditions to ensure greater production and therefore greater well-being for Nicaragua’s families.
The Government of Reconciliation and National Unity is committed to continue generating trade promotion policies and actions to ensure the quality of our products, including coffee, so as to enable reaching more and better markets.
As a result of these policies and actions, today the productive sector has better logistics so that the marketing happens quickly in a timely way via the collection centers and processing centers and reaching ports and international markets.
From the public institutions, the municipalities, the National Coffee Council (CONACAFE) supported by the National Commission for the Transformation and Development of Coffee Cultivation (CONATRADEC), actions will continue to be carried out to continue promoting quality production, with activities for accompaniment, technical assistance, training and promotion of Nicaraguan coffee, so that our coffee can continue being among the best in the world.
Despite these remarkable advances, we must take into account that there are elements that may impact on this productive cycle in the country.
Climate change, for example, is affecting production around the world. However, we are all learning to deal with this phenomenon, incorporating technologies and methods to sustain crops and increase their yields.
On the other hand, the world has also been convulsed by new, and old!, demands in international commercial and political aspects. There are emerging threats, or some would say actually repetitive forms of threats that respect nothing and no one in their eagerness to dismantle the international system that nations have been building over the past 80 years.
The Nicaraguan people, who have faced all kinds of difficulties, external interventions, climatic effects and political threats, have been able throughout their history to confront them and overcome them relying on their own strengths and on the unity of the whole people.
In these conditions of uncertainties in the world, the vision and the certain leadership of our Co-Presidents, Comandante Daniel Ortega and Compañera Rosario Murillo, have been vital to advance in opening up relations with all the countries of the world, which means new markets, more access to investment and greater international cooperation.
Compañeras and Compañeros,
A fundamental component in reaching all the achievements of our Good Government is the guarantee of living in a country in Peace and Security, which are the basis, the environment which drives the development and well-being of Nicaragua’s families. We are blessed to have a stable and united country.
Hence the commitment of the Defense and Security institutions, the Nicaraguan Army and the National Police, the institutions of the Government of Reconciliation and National Unity, including the National System of Production, Consumption and Trade, which, together with our hard-working people, will ensure compliance with the Inter-Institutional Plan for the Protection and Security of the coffee harvest 2025-2026.
We are sure that this, too, will be another successful coffee harvest, so we take this chance to congratulate everyone, producers, coffee workers, marketers and distributors, everyone who participates with their effort and commitment in the tasks of coffee production.
Thank You Very Much
