NICARAGUA: RESPECT FOR OUR
PEOPLE AND GOVERNMENT

The Government of Reconciliation and National Unity of Nicaragua, in view of the situation generated by the Authorities of Panama who have requested INTERPOL to issue Red Alerts in relation to economic actions on behalf of the Citizen ex-President Ricardo Martinelli, who enjoys the condition of Humanitarian Asylum in the Embassy of Nicaragua in that Country, our Ministry of Foreign Affairs communicates :

    1. We have recently learned, with alarm, of actions violating diplomatic norms and the status of Asylum, by authorities in different Countries, who have assaulted and invaded Embassies, even physically assaulting Ambassadors, and kidnapping benefeciaries of asylum.

    2. We do not understand why the Panamanian authorities granted Safe Conduct but almost immediately issued a request for a Red Alert for criminal actions to INTERPOL.

    3. This contradictory behavior seems to be a legal trap inviting faithless complicity alien to the political behavior, consistent with International Conventions, of the Government of Reconciliation and National Unity of Nicaragua.

    4. Therefore, we have informed the Panamanian Authorities that until they can resolve this inconsistency, we cannot, as Authorities of a Responsible and Humanitarian State, accept what we consider to be an ambush, both to the Citizen ex-President, who has the condition of Asylum and Refuge in our Embassy and who would be exposed to aggressive actions, but also to the Government of Nicaragua itself, with whom it seems intended to generate an international dispute that neither interests us, nor concerns us, nor belongs to us.

    5. We therefore denounce the absurd positions and attitudes of the Panamanian Authorities, positions which they should amend immediately, putting themselves on the side of political and humanitarian good practice.

    6. The Government of Panama, moreover, since President José Raúl Mulino Quintero took office, has been noteworthy for ignoring, defaming and acting against the Government of Nicaragua via unjustly offensive Statements and also blocking, in complicity with other Countries, Nicaragua's right to the Seat that rightfully belongs to us in the General Secretariat of SICA.

Consistent with our Vocation for Good Neighborliness and the correct interpretation and application of  the Legislation and Conventions of International Law, we demand that the Authorities of Panama, its President, and its Ministry of Foreign Affairs act appropriately to foster Relations of Respect, Understanding and Brother and Sisterhood between our Countries, because our Peoples do indeed know how to be be Fraternal.
