REMARKS BY NICARAGUA
IN DEBATE ON THE US BLOCKADE OF CUBA

General Assembly, United Nations
October 30th, 2024

Mr. President,

1. We associate ourselves with the statements made by the representative of Iraq on behalf of the G77+China, Uganda on behalf of the Non-Aligned Movement, Honduras on behalf of the Community of Latin American and Caribbean States (CELAC) and Eritrea on behalf of the Group of Friends in Defense of the United Nations Charter.

2. We thank and salute the presence of our Brother, Comrade Bruno Rodríguez, Foreign Minister of Cuba, the delegation that accompanies him and the important information provided, which shows the damages that beloved Sister Cuba continues to face.

Mr. President,

3. The capricious imperial hegemony undermines multilateralism and the credibility of the United Nations, making it imperative to abandon this unipolar thinking for a spirit of liberation, with its own voice, identity, dignity and shared values.

4. The International Community must move forward and merge into the new Multipolar World which is now evident, march towards greater integration, rejecting and denouncing the vestiges of imperialism, colonialism and neocolonialism.

5. Cooperation based on mutual respect, the Charter of the United Nations and non-interference are essential for the development of the peoples of the world.

6. Applying or encouraging the use of economic, political or any other kind of coercive measures are flagrant violations of International law and the United Nations Charter.

7. It is reprehensible that, in these times, there are States which continue to impose the use of illegal unilateral, arbitrary coercive measures, as a selective political instrument to attack dignified independent peoples, who reject their interventionist measures and disagree with their impositions.

8. In the face of these systemic interferences, our peoples must unite with solidarity-inspired political will to reject, condemn and defeat these aggressions, exercising their inalienable right to Self-determination, defending National Sovereignty and Independence and building their own Model of Political, Economic, Social and Cultural Development, free of foreign interference, interventions, threats or aggressions.

9. So many decades have passed since 1959. Since then, by imposing this illegal inhuman blockade, the United States has attacked, provoked, and attempted the destruction of the heroic and generous Cuban Revolution.

10. This economic, commercial and financial blockade, imposed unilaterally by the United States against Cuba, has evolved and has been tightened over more than 65 years and is one more measure among the various terrorist actions perpetrated against Cuba.

11. Today the blockade includes a set of measures of aggression and economic coercion, with the declared intention of isolating, suffocating and immobilizing Cuba. The United States complements it with an intense defamation campaign, such as the unjustified inclusion of Cuba in the infamous “list of State sponsors of terrorism,” from which Nicaragua demands that Cuba should be excluded.

12. The negative repercussions of the blockade have multiplied over the years, preventing Cuba having vital access to goods important for the social, economic and environmental needs of the Cuban people's human development.

13. In addition to massively and flagrantly violating the basic human rights of the Cuban people, the United States demonstrates total contempt, violating the right to life, health, food, education, including the right to development and the right to self-determination. We are clearly facing an international crime against the Cuban people.

Mr. President,

14. In Cuba, in the spirit of Fidel, his people are resisting today more than ever and bravely overcoming the most brutal blockade of all time. Few countries in the world would, as Cuba has done, be able to face such a ruthless, asymmetric and prolonged aggression, to destabilize and cause pain and suffering in the daily life of the Cuban people.

15. Year after year, the international community has declared unjustifiable what the United States tries to justify in order to subdue a People that will never surrender, a People with the combative will and absolute firmness, who have defended with dignity their sovereignty, their Revolution, their Socialism, an example of solidarity and nobility of our Latin America and Caribbean and the world.

16. Nicaragua once again condemns the immoral and unjust blockade imposed on Cuba, which always shows internationalist solidarity, always ready to help the international community.

17. We immediately demand the end of the economic, commercial and financial blockade imposed by the government of the United States of America on the sister Republic of Cuba, a destructive policy that continues to be an immoral act against the Cuban people. This practice is illegitimate, illegal and detracts from the progress made in global economic governance.

18. The Government of the United States of America, with its anachronistic, obsolete interventionist policy, continues to ignore the universal outcry of the peoples of the world, including its own, exposing its total contempt towards the United Nations. In 32 resolutions this General Assembly has demanded an end to this inhuman blockade.

19. The Peoples of the World, including of the United States, will always be with Cuba, by its side, making their way along with it, they want this aggressive policy to be rectified, they want peace, respect, non-interference and the end of this illegal blockade against Cuba.

Mr. President,

20. We are fully convinced that International Solidarity with Cuba will remain in force, that the General Assembly, by adopting this resolution today, will once again condemn this criminal blockade, and all the extraterritorial measures and ramifications that continue to intensify against the Sister Republic of Cuba.

21. Nicaragua will always be united to the Indomitable Spirit of Martí, Fidel, Raúl, Díaz-Canel, defending the sovereignty and self-determination of the great Cuban People.

22. Nicaragua, as every year, will vote in favor of draft resolution A/79/L.6, reiterating our support, gratitude and solidarity with the generous, beloved Cuban People and Government, with its heroism, good example and unconditional solidarity in sharing with humanity its knowledge, its capacities, its commitment to the poorest of the earth, to the sick whom it heals, to the literate who benefit from educational courses, in short, Cuba is always ready to assist with its programs and experience to any people who require and request it.

23. Today, this General Assembly, by universally adopting this resolution presented by Cuba, defends Multilateralism and the Charter of the United Nations, seeking the long-awaited understanding, good neighborliness, peaceful coexistence among Nations, for that Culture of Peace which we all call for and desire.

Thank you very much.
