MESSAGE FROM NICARAGUA
68TH SESSION OF THE COMMISSION
OF THE STATUS OF WOMEN (CSW)
MARCH 11 TO 22, 2024, NEW YORK
On behalf of our President, Comandante Daniel Ortega Saavedra, of our Vice President Compañera Rosario Murillo and of the People of Nicaragua, we convey our fraternal greetings and our wishes for peace and the Common Good for all.
Within the framework of this session on the Legal and Social Status of Women, the Government of Reconciliation and National Unity (GRUN), shares the progress of our Model of Equity and Complementarity, aimed at strengthening the leading participation of Women, Families and Communities.
In 2023, the World Economic Forum ranked Nicaragua as the first country in Latin America with the highest gender equality and as the number 7 worldwide, while on the UN Women Political Map we are ranked fourth in countries with women in Ministerial positions and in the Third Place with the most women in the National Assembly.
In the National Assembly, out of 91 Deputies, 50 are Women and in the Central American Parliament, out of 20 Deputies, 10 are Women. In Local Governments, out of 153 Municipal Mayorships, 82 are female Mayors. In the Supreme Electoral Council, out of 10 Magistrates, 6 are Women and in the Government Cabinet, out of a total of 34 Ministers and Vice-Ministers, 20 are Women Ministers and Vice-Ministers.
This positioning has been possible thanks to the political will of the Government of Nicaragua that, through its National Plan to Combat Poverty and for Human Development 2022-2026, implements policies, programs and strategic actions for the restitution of rights, guaranteeing access to free and quality education at all levels and modalities, access to health, access to means and forms of production and food security, thus contributing to the reduction of poverty and inequalities, contributing to the fulfillment of the 2030 Agenda and the Sustainable Development Goals.
We currently have a Budget with a Gender perspective, a National Gender Policy and a Legal Framework strengthened through 17 years of Good Governance, which aims to include in all the actions of our State and Government Institutions, Equal Rights and Opportunities for Women and Men for the full exercise of human rights.
For the empowerment of women, the Government of Nicaragua promotes education and credit, programs for business ideas aimed at promoting their economic rights; we have also encouraged the participation of women to the level of 68% of those already enrolled for 2024 in technical education.
Through the Ministry of Family Economy, since 2012 to date, preferential loans have been granted to 250,552 protagonists for enterprises in the countryside and agricultural production, guaranteeing their food security.
In 17 years of Good Governance, 548,000 women have been provided with loans through the Zero Usury Program, allowing them to contribute to the family economy, and to strengthen women's full participation, leadership and protagonism in all spaces, through its Direct Presence Model, aimed at the family and the Community, the Ministry of Women attended more than 84,850 women in its programs in 2023.
In addition, the rights of women and girls are promoted through a Prevention and Security Plan developed by the 293 Women's Police Commissariats located in rural neighborhoods and Communities. Likewise, the following emergency phone lines are being promoted: line 118 of the National Police for complaints and line 133 of the Ministry of the Family for guidance.
The Government of Nicaragua will continue its efforts to guarantee the rights and empowerment of women and girls in order to move towards sustainable human development with equity and equal rights.
Thank you very much
