NICARAGUA'S POSITION FACED WITH THE GREEN CLIMATE FUND SECRETARIAT’S AGGRESSIVE CANCELLATION
OF THE BIOCLIMA PROGRAM MEANT TO SERVE THE NATIVE AND AFRO-DESCENDANT COMMUNITIES OF OUR NICARAGUA
The Government of Nicaragua repudiates and rejects the decision of the Secretariat of the Green Climate Fund who, by means of non-transparent, unethical processes and procedures, have canceled their financing of the BIOCLIMA Project which was designed to contribute to the protection and defense of the Bosawas and Indio Maíz Biosphere Reserves, by reducing deforestation, increasing reforestation and strengthening the resilience of these important Reserves.
Nicaragua’s People and their institutions have been exemplary in the mission of caring for Mother Earth. Nicaragua was the first Country to sign the Universal Declaration of the Rights of Mother Earth and Humanity, and has also consistently recognized the property rights of the Original Peoples and Afro-descendant Communities, achieving international recognition for having demarcated and titled 25 Original Peoples Territories with an area equal to 38,426 square kilometers, equivalent to 31.6% of our National Territory.
We have handed over to the Original Communities, to the Original Peoples, 31.6% of our Territory, 38,426 kilometers. What more demonstration could there be of our Country’s strengthening of the Rights of the Indigenous Communities and Peoples.
Under the Presidency of our Comandante Daniel, there has been the largest social and infrastructure investment in the entire history of our Nicaragua, guaranteeing the improvement of the quality of life for all Nicaraguan Families, for all its Households, and most fundamentally for those who had been excluded historically. We have developed Programs for Education, Health, Housing, Water and Sanitation, Citizen Security, Promotion of Small and Medium-sized Production, Energy and Highways, among others; with a sustained effort too protecting and defending Natural Resources, the Environment and Biodiversity.
Therefore, the Government of Nicaragua, the Republic of Nicaragua, denounces the aggressive, coercive and unilateral measures of this Institution, by which they have violated the Principles and Agreements it signed before the International Community; Agreements signed to defend Nature, for adaptation and mitigation in the face of Climate Change, and to ensure the transformation of the Lives of Indigenous and Afro-descendant Peoples, leaving no one out.
We insist, we demand, that the Green Climate Fund guarantee the mobilization of the resources committed by the International Community that have been taken away from the Indigenous and Afro-descendant Peoples of our Nicaragua; that it mobilize these resources to address the challenges and multiple crises that humanity faces, such as the Climate Change caused by the wealthiest Countries, the very same ones that attack our Original Peoples, Miskitos, Mayagnas, Creoles, Garífunas, Ramas, Ulwas, Sumos and Mestizos.
These same rich countries are the ones that are attacking, that have attacked, the ones who have tried to do away with the Rights of each of these Original Peoples and Communities that are part of Nicaragua; Original Peoples and Communities of which we are extremely proud, because we are ourselves part of them.
