MESSAGE FROM THE DELEGATION OF THE STATE OF NICARAGUA AT THE INTERNATIONAL
CONFERENCE ON THE PROMOTION OF RIGHTS AND EMPOWERMENT OF WOMEN,
IN BAKU, AZERBAIJAN
20-21 November, 2023
Respected ladies and gentlemen, representatives of the Non-Aligned Movement (NAM), all participants in this important International Conference, which contributes to strengthening the unity and brotherhood between our peoples, in this permanent struggle to strengthen the empowerment of women throughout the world. Please receive fraternal greetings from our President of the Republic, Comandante Daniel Ortega Saavedra and from our Vice President of the Republic, Compañera Rosario Murillo.
We wish to share our experience, as women, as delegates in this event, of what our people are, a brave people, where women, along with men, are working to build our own destiny, under the leadership of the Government of Reconciliation and National Unity (GRUN), which since 2007 has undertaken a process of structural changes, in order to guarantee progressive development in the enjoyment of Human Rights of the Nicaraguan nation, as well as sustainable development throughout the national territory, through a working model inspired by Christian, socialist and solidarity values.
This development model stands out for the leading role of the people of Nicaragua in the implementation of the National Human Development Plan, which guarantees the exercise of Human Rights at the economic, social, cultural, civil, political and environmental levels, adjusted to the reality, history and culture of the Nicaraguan people, as a national project, without discrimination and with the leading participation of women and youth.
Our Government has promoted policies and programs that involve all State entities and institutions, aimed at promoting economic-social development, reducing and combating extreme poverty and poverty, infrastructure, access to basic services, legal security of properties, health, education, work, among other human rights; which has resulted in a substantial improvement in the quality of life of the entire population and a sustained reduction in poverty rates.
Nicaragua was one of the first Latin American countries to achieve the Millennium Development Goal (MDG1), of halving poverty and hunger. In addition, the Millennium Development Goal (MDG) to reduce by two thirds by 2015, the mortality rate of boys and girls under 1 and 5 years of age per 1,000 live births was achieved.
Gender equality and equity has been a priority of the State, in harmony with its vocation to respect human rights, peace and solidarity, incorporating it into regulatory and legal instruments that guide the execution of Social, Economic, Cultural and Political Strategies and Programs, for the restitution of the Rights, Empowerment and Leadership of Women and their families, in the different spaces of participation.
The Government's management on this issue has allowed international organizations to highlight Nicaragua as a country with extraordinary progress in reducing gender inequalities; as was the Report on the Global Gender Gap of the World Economic Forum (WEF) of June 2023, which places Nicaragua with a gender gap of 81.1%, placing our country among the top 10 countries in the world ranking, this specifically means that Nicaragua is located in the 7th position, advancing 83 positions, in relation to the position No. 90 occupied in 2007.
Nicaragua today is among the first countries in the world with equal participation of men and women in Powers of the State and Municipal Governments; women are in charge of publicly elected and appointed positions, such as the Vice Presidency of the Republic, Presidency of the Electoral Power, Vice Presidency of the National Assembly, Office of the Attorney General, State Prosecutor and Ombudsman for the Defense of Human Rights.
In the Government Cabinet, there are nine women ministers, out of a total of 16 ministries, which constitutes 56.25% of the cabinet, leading the Ministry of Women; Ministry of the Family, Community and Associative Economy; Ministry of the Environment and Natural Resources; Ministry of Defense; Ministry of Interior; Ministry of Education, Family, Adolescence and Children; Ministry of Health; Ministry of Labor, among others.
Women also represents 59.7% in the Judiciary; 56.25% in the Executive Branch; 45.7% in the Legislative Branch and 57% in publicly elected positions of the Board of Directors of the National Assembly.
Likewise, Law No. 790, Law Amendment to Law No. 331 Electoral Law and Law No. 40, Law for Municipalities, establishes that political parties must guarantee the equal participation of men and women in 50 and 50, in the candidacies for Mayors; Vice Mayors, Councilors and Regional Councils.
This is the country model that the people of Nicaragua defend with love and fervor and we will continue to defend it, despite the multiple attacks and aggressions suffered by countries and organizations aligned with the interests of Yankee imperialism, interests that are contrary to the principles of the Human Rights and the nature of the respectful relations that must exist between States. Rights that everyone, from every corner of the world, must promote and defend, to achieve equality, solidarity and the common good of the entire international society.
