DECLARATION IN SOLIDARITY WITH THE NICARAGUAN PEOPLE
July 22, 2022
We are an international delegation of organizations in solidarity with the Nicaraguan people and their sovereign right to self-determination. We have had the privilege of joining in the celebration of this year’s anniversary of the Sandinista Popular Revolution.
Under its revolutionary government this small country has transformed the social and economic prospects of its population in terms that people in many rich countries would envy. The Nicaraguan people have a right to continue this process and determine their destiny without interference from other nations.
In particular Nicaragua can point to its exceptional achievements in terms of health care, education, gender equality, economic democratization, and indigenous and regional autonomy. Despite this tremendous social, economic, and cultural progress the country remains subject to extremely aggressive and illegal coercive measures, referred to as sanctions, from the United States government and its allies.
These gains are in strong contrast to what North Americans have come to expect from their own political system, which deprives them of these human rights and genuine democracy while simultaneously condemning Nicaragua. Over many decades the United States government and its allies have dedicated enormous resources in an effort to destroy the exemplary model which Nicaragua represents. It is precisely because this model succeeds in meeting the needs of the people that it is seen as threatening U.S. efforts to impose its domination on the hemisphere. It is also an inspiration to North Americans and other peoples who want to have their needs and rights respected and addressed by their own governments.
On this 43rd anniversary, we witnessed tremendous joy, enthusiasm, and energy from Nicaraguans that their revolutionary process has survived and continues in the face of United States government policy to crush it. Significantly, the youth of the country, born after the revolution began, are overwhelmingly committed to defending and developing their nation.
We have seen and heard abundant evidence of electoral integrity, vibrant debate, and genuine accountability, during this and other opportunities our organizations have had to visit Nicaragua.
