Solidarity event ‘Another way is possible: Nicaragua's social economy and
co-operatives’ Saturday 15 July, 2.30 – 4.30pm
Seventy per cent of Nicaragua’s population is employed in the social economy: small and medium sized businesses and farms, co-operatives, associations, and as self-employed workers. How do these sectors organise and what difference has 16 years of Sandinista government made to their lives? The event will also be a celebration of the 44th anniversary of the Sandinista Revolution.
Speakers: Nick Hoskyns who has worked with co-ops in Nicaragua for the past 20 years, Ben Southern-Thomas who took part in a recent Friends of the ATC delegation, and Nicaraguan Ambassador to the UK and Ireland, Guisell Morales. Chair: Albert Tucker, ETICO, the ethical trading company.

Forthcoming webinar

São Paulo Forum
The XXVI Plenary Session of the São Paulo Forum closed by adopting important resolutions that strengthen the work of the Left, Progressive and Revolutionary Governments and Parties of Latin America and the Caribbean. The meeting took place from June 29 to July 2, 2023 in Brasilia, Brazil.
Delegations and international guests at the Forum rejected the campaign of disinformation and fake news against Nicaragua's government and leaders – see link here – and the session concluded with a condemnation of the US blockades against Cuba, Nicaragua and Venezuela – see link here
International Court of Justice
Thirty-seven years ago, on June 27, 1986, the International Court of Justice condemned the United States for President Ronald Reagan’s bloody terrorist war against the people of Nicaragua. The ICJ ruled that the US government had violated international law in its attacks on Nicaragua and that it owed Nicaragua reparations in the order of $US17 billion. To this day, the US had refused to pay Nicaragua the reparations it owes. Today, the Nicaraguan government is demanding that the United Nations take action. For more see here and here
Gender Equality
According to the latest edition of the Global Gender Gap Report of the World Economic Forum (WEF), in Latin America, Nicaragua is the country that has made notable progress in reducing the gender gap. Globally, Nicaragua occupies the seventh position, surpassed by five countries in Europe and New Zealand. The report states Nicaragua is first in: women professional and technical workers, women technical workers, women’s educational attainment, women’s literacy, women’s enrolment in third-level education, women in Parliament and women in Ministerial positions.
