Latin America 2016 – Cuba sessions confirmed

The election of Donald Trump and its impact on US policy towards Latin America will be a key focus of this year’s Latin America – Adelante! Conference 2016 which takes place at the TUC Congress House on Saturday 26 November.
The largest event of the year for Latin America solidarity in Britain – now in its 12th year –will feature contributions from over 50 speakers from Argentina, Brazil, Colombia, Cuba, Ecuador, Nicaragua, Venezuela and the UK.
As well as the main plenary sessions, three seminars on Cuba have also been confirmed:
1] Living with the enemy: the truth behind the headlines of Cuba-US relations two years on
Experts from Cuba and North America discuss what has been achieved in two years of diplomatic relations between Cuba and the US. Should we be optimistic for the future, or is the US continuing a policy of regime change by another name, and how will a Trump presidency affect this?
With Teresita Vicente, Cuban Ambassador to the UK, Keith Bolender, academic and author from Canada, Bernard Regan, CSC National Secretary.
2] Pillars of the Revolution: How health, education and cultural advances have shaped Cuban society and the world
British experts in health, education and culture discuss the Cuban Revolution’s achievements in these fields, how Cuba's internationalism supports international development, and what more could be shared to inspire progressive social policies.
With Dr Imti Choonara, paediatric doctor and Emeritus Professor, University of Nottingham, Kiri Tunks, teacher and vice president of the National Union of Teachers, Dr Rebecca Gordon-Nesbitt, writer and researcher in arts for health.
3] The Struggle Continues: ending the US blockade and occupation of Guantánamo. Why, and what needs to be done?
As the blockade enters its 55th year, and the occupation of Guantánamo its 115th, we look at their impact on the people of Cuba and what we in Britain can do to help end them once and for all.
