Nicaraguan elections : opposition legislative offensive fails

It seems the attempt by the PLC leadership - in alliance with Eduardo Montealegre, ex-candidate for mayor of Managua - to destabilize Nicaragua's institutions via moves in the legislature to annul the recent municipal elections has failed. As a viable legislative project, the move was doomed from the start since it is unconstitutional. But it was always more of an attempt at causing instability than a serious legislative project. Now La Primerisima is reporting the minority Alianza Liberal Nicaragüense is refusing to support the proposed measure. In theory that should be the end of the matter. But it is unlikely the US ambassador and his team who are directing Eduardo Montealegre's strategy will let matters lie there. We'll have to wait and see what they dream up next to further their destabilization campaign against the FSLN government. If they have any sense they'll dump a loser like Montealegre and start promoting someone with some appeal and talent - but those individuals are thin on the ground in the Liberal opposition in Nicaragua, something Montealegre's failure demonstrates quite well.
